Lidocaine Injection Treating Irregular Heartbeat
Title: Lidocaine Injection Treating Irregular Heartbeat
Lidocaine injection is given by injection (shot) or IV infusion to treat an irregular heartbeat. It is usually given in an emergency. It may also be used for other conditions. It is indicated for Infiltration and nerve block anesthesia typically used in dental operative setting.
Side Effects
Side effects of Lidocaine injection are same in nature to those observed with other amide local anesthetic agents. These side effects are, usually, dose-related and may result from high plasma levels attributable to overdosage or rapid absorption, or may be caused by a hypersensitivity, idiosyncrasy or diminished tolerance in the patient.
Serious side effects are normally systemic in nature. The following types are those most commonly reported:
Central Nervous System: CNS shows the following signs and symptoms: tinnitus, blurred vision, vomiting, circumoral paresthesia, lightheadedness, apprehension, euphoria, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, hyperacusis, sensations of heat, cold or numbness, twitching, tremors, convulsions, unconsciousness, respiratory depression and arrest. The excitatory manifestations such as, twitching, tremors, convulsions may occur for a least time or may not happen at all.
Cardiovascular System: under cardiovascular we can include bradycardia, hypotension, arrhythmia and cardiovascular collapse, which may lead to cardiac arrest.
Allergic: Taking of Lidocaine injectionmay also leads toallergic reactions such as cutaneous lesions, urticaria, and edema or, in the most severe instances, anaphylactic shock. Allergic reactions of the amide type are rare (< 0.1%) and may occur as a result of sensitivity either to the local anesthetic agent or to other components in the formulation.
Drug Interactions
The use of local anesthetic solutions containing epinephrine or norepinephrine to patients receiving monoamine oxidase inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants may cause serious, prolonged hypertension.
Phenothiazines and butyrophenones may decrease or reverse the pressor effect of epinephrine. Simultaneous use of these agents should generally be avoided. In situations when concurrent therapy is necessary, monitor patient carefully.
Simultaneous use of vasopressor drugs and ergot-type oxytocic drugs may cause severe, persistent hypertension or cerebrovascular accidents. Vasopressor drugs are generally used to treat hypotension related to obstetric blocks.
